Kathy Tate, a sixth generation Texan, was born and grew up in the countryside of north central Texas.
Coming from a long line of artisans, her interest in art began at a very early age while watching her father with his technical drawings and her grandmother as she created beautiful works of art using fabric. Tate quietly cultivated this interest and later studied art and drafting in college. In 1973 at the age of 20 she took her first oil painting classes with New Mexico impressionist Gaitha Browning.
